Storm adds backdrop to Jim Thorpe’s Winterfest celebration
The 32nd annual Winterfest was held in Jim Thorpe over the weekend, with a winter storm to add snow to the ambiance of the event.
The festivities began with the Luminary Walk held Friday evening. People strolled along Broadway and Race Street, enjoying the lighted luminaries along the sidewalks and on the steps and porches of many of the town’s businesses.
Another popular event was the Mug Walk. People purchased mugs in advance, and picked them up at the train station. There was a list of vendors and shops; people would go to each of the shops on the list and get some discounts and special gifts.
“We sold around 700 mugs this year,” said Ashley Graver, Winterfest Coordinator.
Visitors had the change to enjoy train and trolley rides, delicious food and drink around Josiah White Park, and all the shops, restaurants, and galleries on Broadway and Race Street.
A special event that returned this year was the ice carvings.
“We have 17 ice sculptures around town, and four live ice sculpture demonstrations,” Graver said.
CharLee Mares and Gabriella Santoro, both from the Philadelphia area, created all the sculptures and did the live demonstrations at the Mauch Chunk Opera House.
“Each piece took, on average, about 20 to 40 minutes to sculpt,” Santoro explained.
