A former Summit Hill woman died in a house fire Friday night in Pottsville.
Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David Moylan identified as 80-year-old Gail Babcock, who lived in the apartment where the fire occurred.
Babcock was the twin sister of the late Lyle R. Christopher of Summit Hill. Among her survivors are daughters Kimberly and Kristen.
Reports indicate city emergency personnel were called around 9:15 p.m. to 1126 Arch St. for a house fire with a possible entrapment. According to Assistant Fire Chief Dan Kelly, firemen encountered heavy flames coming from the building when they arrived, and managed to knock down the blaze in about a half-hour.
Babcock’s body was located in an apartment in the structure, in the area where the fire started. Dr. Moylan said her body was transported to the Schuylkill Forensics Center, where a post-mortem CT scan will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Authorities said the building had extensive damages and neighboring residences had at least smoke damage.
They said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. A state police fire marshal was at the scene on Saturday, but no cause has been determined.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries after falling due to the icy conditions, authorities said.
