Lansford getting cameras to deter park vandalism
Lansford Borough Council took action to stop vandalism at its parks, approving a proposal for security cameras Wednesday night.
Council approved the purchase of camera systems for both Ashton Hill and Kennedy parks from Security Service Co. of Fleetwood at a cost of $4,094 and $5,670, respectively, plus $5 a month each for remote technical support.
Councilwoman Michele Bartek said at last week’s workshop that the proposal included installation of the system, wireless access points and eight cameras in the parks.
The cameras would also be installed at high points or mounted on poles to prevent anyone from accessing them or breaking them, she said.
The parks have fallen prey to vandals multiple times, including an instance in April 2023 during which the concession stand at Ashton Park was trashed after someone jimmied open a window.
Borough council discussed adding security cameras then, but never acted on the move.
More recently, a plastic sliding board at the park was damaged.
Replacements for that slide are no longer available, according to Councilman Joe Butrie.
Bartek also pointed out that some of the lighted Christmas trees at Kennedy Park were vandalized, along with the power supply.
Councilwoman Jennifer Staines said that she got estimates for a security camera system in the parks three years ago and council took no action. The recent damage, she said, could have been prevented.
Council members said the previous estimates for the security systems were too costly, coming in around $40,000. Staines said the coverage with that system would have been extensive.
The new camera systems will be funded through the parks and recreation budget.
Council also approved having ARRO Engineering, the borough engineer, prepare bid documents and an advertisement for a new electrical system in Ashton Park.
The borough recently received a state grant for the work.
