Resident Eric King of 336 First St., Slatington, came to the Borough Council meeting to find out why Diamond Street, which is used by many children to walk to the Northern Lehigh School, was not salted.
King asked, “Why wasn’t the borough crew out Sunday after the storm working to make it safe for the kids? They had a two-hour delay today.”
He said the streets should have been cleaned before school started and noted that residents also had not cleaned the sidewalks.
“The kids were slipping and falling,” King said.
The current snow removal ordinance states that residents who don’t have sidewalks should clear a 3-foot path at the edge of their yards.
Manager Roy Hambrect said, “If you’re going to enforce the sidewalks that are not done, you will have to enforce the 3 feet.”
Mayor Jeralyn Schoch said, “But that’s their personal property to be walking on.”
President David Schnaars said, “We need to update that, because it was written long ago.”
Mayor Jeralyn Schoch said, “I know our zoning officer is busy, but we need to have these people cited.”
Schnaars said the borough is working on hiring another part-time zoning officer.
