Proposed solar farm approved for Mahoning Twp.

A solar farm has been approved for property in Mahoning Township.

Supervisors on Wednesday held a conditional use hearing that was continued from Jan. 8.

The applicants were Solar Renewable Energy LLC and Ashtown Road Solar Partners LLC.

They sought conditional use approval to use properties located along Ashtown Drive tax parcel nos. 84-35-A2 and 84-35-A2-05 for solar generation commercial.

Tax parcel 84-35-A2 is owned by Melo Enterprises LLC, and tax parcel 84-35-A2.05 is owned by Leon George II and Danielle George.

The subject premise is zoned I-1 Research and Development and Industrial.

A section of the zoning ordinance “Solar power generation commercial” is permitted in the I-1 Research and Development and Industrial District as a conditional use.

Resident Collin Rehrig, of Ashtown Drive, said he doesn’t believe it’s the best use for the land.

Supervisor Deb McGowan said she understood Rehrig’s concerns.

“I’m not happy with it either,” McGowan said.

Ultimately, supervisors granted conditional use approval.

Board Chairman Robert Slaw and Supervisor Ron Reeser were absent.

In December, the township held a conditional use hearing for a solar farm request after Solar Renewable Energy LLC and Ashtown Road Solar Partners LLC applied for a request for a conditional use.

Melo Enterprises LLC requested and Leon A. George II and Danielle M. George filed for permits for property located on Ashtown Drive in an I-1 Research and Development and Industrial zoning district.
