Tamaqua gets $1.3M proposal for HS roof

The Tamaqua Area High School will be getting a new roof as part of a planned district capital improvement project.

The district received a proposal from Weatherproofing Technologies Inc./Tremco for $1,332,462.20, as a base bid, and alternate bid for additional work for $132,497.66.

The district received $450,000 in state funding for the project through the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program, which provided schools with up to $5 million for needed facility upgrades.

Superintendent Ray Kinder thanked his assistant superintendent, Dr. Stephen Toth, for seeking out the funding for a needed project, as opposed for a pipe dream project that may or may not be funded.

“He did a great job with this,’ Kinder said.

Tamaqua Area was one of seven districts locally that received funding through the grant program, and one of 208 statewide that obtained funds.

Kinder said that the project would include all of the roof, including small awnings, and Ken Dunkelberger, chief operations officer, said that the alternate bid would repair or replace a knee wall on the perimeter of the roof.

Some of the equipment, such as vents, date to the 1960s, he said, and will be replaced.

Board President Larry Wittig questioned if the district has to pay for maintenance, and Dunkelberger said that they call Tremco, which will send out their personnel at no cost.

The work comes with a 25-year warranty or they will replace it, Dunkelberger said.

Board member Daniel Schoener asked about how long the roof would last, and Dunkelberger pointed out that they had made repairs to portions of the roof in the last eight to 10 years.

The project doesn’t include the auditorium roof, which was done about three years ago, Dunkelberger said.

The board is expected to vote on the proposal next week.
