NW’s Thomas named CL Player of the Year

Northwestern senior Cara Thomas, who recently became the school’s all-time leading scorer, was named the Colonial League Girls Basketball Coaches Association’s Player of the Year.

Thomas, who is averaging 19.3 points per game this season, helped the Tigers post a regular-season record of 20-2 and guide them to the league’s championship game, which will be played Friday.

The multi-sport athlete, who was also named the Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Field Hockey Player of the Year after the fall season, passed Steve Showers’ total of 1,451 points to reach No. 1 status on Northwestern’s career scoring list.

Thomas is joined on the league’s first team with a pair of Northern Lehigh standouts. Senior Katelynn Barthold (21.0 ppg) was also selected to the top squad, as was teammate Tegan Simms (20.4), a sophomore. The two Bulldogs helped their team record a regular-season mark of 15-7 and berths in both the league and district playoffs.

Palmerton’s duo of Mikayla Pengelly, a senior, Courtney Connell, a junior, were named to the league’s second team. The Bomber players were key members of a team that posted an 18-4 record-season record and two postseason berths (league, districts). Joining the two Palmerton players on the second team is Northwestern’s Natalie Connor, the only freshman named to either the first or second teams.

Other local players who received honorable mention status included Palmerton’s Hailey Barry and Ella Baumgardt, Lehighton’s Leah Uyvari and Emma Repsher, and Northwestern’s Brook Balliet.
