Lansford residents to see increase in garbage pickup fee
Lansford residents will be paying more for garbage collection, as the borough locked into a five-year contract with Tamaqua Transfer.
Borough council approved the $3.67 million contract with Tamaqua Transfer and Recycling Inc. on Wednesday night. The five-year deal includes two town cleanups each year.
The new contract will see the quarterly garbage fee of $60 increase by $42.04. Residents will be paying $102.04 a quarter under the new pact, or $408.16 a year for garbage removal.
The borough solicited bids for one-year, three-year and five-year contracts for trash removal with options for two town cleanups including up to four tires with no rims each year, recycling and two electronic cleanups.
Tamaqua Transfer, which is the borough’s current trash hauler, was the only bidder. The firm did not bid on a one-year contract or electronics recycling.
Council considered the bids on three-year and five-year contracts without the town cleanups, $2,122,313 and $3,617,454, respectively, and bids on the three-year and five-year contracts with the town cleanups, $2,152,313 and $3,673,454, respectively.
The three-year contract would have cost residents $38.28 more a quarter without a town cleanup, and $39.64 more a quarter.
The five-year contract without the town cleanups would have cost $40.48 more a quarter.
Tamaqua Transfer also bid on three- and five-year contracts on the collection, removal and disposal of recyclables, separately.
Council did not consider either recycling option at its meeting Wednesday.
Councilman Joe Butrie explained that council eliminated that option, because the cost was too much for the taxpayers.
A three-year contract for recycling would have cost $450,000, or $20.83 a quarter per household above the increased garbage rate under the new contract.
A five-year contract on recycling came in at $774,000 or an additional $21.50 a quarter above the increased garbage rate under a new contract.
