Looking back at some Super Bowl predictions

Who won?

Don’t worry, I know the Eagles won the Super Bowl.

My question is who won the Times New Super Bowl prediction poll comprised of the newspaper’s sports staff and area coaches?

Not one of the prognosticators predicted the Eagles’ 40-22 victory, likely due to the overwhelming feeling that it was going to be a close game and the betting line was less than two points in favor of the Chiefs.

The overwhelming feeling was that Saquon Barkley would have a huge game and win MVP honors.

Former Times News sports editor Emmett McCall predicted an Eagles’ 24-21 victory, but he had Jalen Hurts throwing two touchdowns and rushing for another, calling it a “Jalen Hurts game.”

And it was another reminder that the area football coaches know their stuff.

Pleasant Valley Blaec Saeger had the biggest differential with his Eagles’ 34-17 score; Jim Thorpe’s Mark Rosenberger had an 11-point spread at 27-16; and Panther Valley’s Mark Lavine and Northwestern’s Josh Snyder both had 10-point victories at Eagles’ 34-24, and Eagles’ 31-21 respectively.

My apologies to Marian’s boys’ basketball coach Scott Murphy, whom I forgot to include his Eagles’ 24-20 prediction, and to fellow scribe and legend Chuck Hixson, whom I forgot to ask.
