Lehighton man threatens to kill officer, others
A Lehighton man has been charged after brandishing a knife and threatening to kill an officer who responded to his home.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Tyler Meek of the Mahoning Township Police Department in the case against Jeffrey DeLong:
At 5:12 p.m. Jan. 20, Meek was dispatched to a home in the 700 block of Jamestown Drive for a man with a knife threatening to harm himself and others.
Once Meek arrived on the scene, a woman told Meek that her husband, Delong, 32, had been making threats of harming himself and others and was locked in a bedroom with a knife.
Meek called to Delong from the kitchen and Delong yelled that he was not coming out and that he had a knife.
Delong told Meek that he is not going back to jail and that he would have to kill him, then opened the door about 2 feet where Meek could see the left side of his body.
At that time, Delong had a 6-inch knife in his left hand, and pointed it at Meek and screamed “I will kill you.”
Lehighton Borough Police Department was then requested, and Delong continued to open and close the door while making threats with a knife in his hand.
While with the knife in his hand and the bedroom door open, Delong yelled “I ain’t going no where. You are going to have to physically put your hands on me, I am telling you right now.”
Delong told police, “I am a violent person. That’s all I am. That’s all I’ll ever be. Because that’s the way I was raised and that’s how it’s supposed to be. I am not supposed to respect authority. That’s what I was taught by my dad.”
He added, “You beat women, you get drunk, you fight cops and you do everything.”
He challenged police to use a Taser, pepper spray or to shoot him.
“I don’t care, this (knife) ain’t coming out of my hand until you make me drop it.”
Delong told police he also had another knife in the bathroom. “So we are going to have some fun.”
After about 30 minutes of negotiating with Delong, Meek was able to have him drop the knife and he was placed in custody, before being transported to the hospital.
The woman told police she had an argument with Delong the evening of Jan. 19 that continued into the morning of Jan. 20.
She said that on Jan. 20, Delong made numerous threats to kill her and held a knife to her mouth and stated “Let’s make it worth it” and ran the knife down her mouth. She had a slight scratch and photos to show injuries.
She said that during the argument, Delong held a knife to a dog’s throat and threatened to kill the dog.
Delong faces charges on two counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault, along with one count of terroristic threats.
He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $250,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 26 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
