Walker Twp. supervisors offer condolences

The Walker Township supervisors took a moment at the start of the Feb. 6 meeting to offer their condolences of the passing of Leonard Ostergaard, who died Sunday at the age of 64. Ostergaard had served as a township supervisor in the past, and was recently on the township’s Park Commission. Ostergaard was the husband of Ann Ostergaard, the township’s secretary.

“It’s very sad,” Supervisor Craig Wagner said. “64 is just too young.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on Saturday at E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Wagner also took a moment to thank the Walker Township road crew for taking care of the roads during Thursday’s ice storm.

“You hear right away if you knock a mailbox over or plow in a driveway,” Wagner said. “But, you hardly hear compliments. We just wanted to let you know the road crew is doing a great job.”

In other business, Walker Township is looking for someone to serve as an auditor for the township. There are currently two auditors, and they would like a third person to help with the township’s finances.

“We were previously doing it through an accounting firm, but it was getting pretty expensive,” Wagner said. “The auditing team we have now does a good job.”

Interested parties can call the township office at 570-668-4603 or email them at walkertwpsecretary@gmail.com.

The New England Fire Company has a number of fundraisers planned, according to a representative, Chad Felty.

“We will be selling roses — $20 for one dozen mixed-color roses, $25 for one dozen red roses,” Felty said.

Call 570-640-6009 to order. Pickup will be Feb. 13 and 14 at the fire hall.

Other fundraisers and events planned include corn hole tournaments, an Easter ham sale, an Easter Filling sale, an Easter egg hunt, chicken barbecue dinner, gun raffle tickets, steak dinner, and more events toward the end of the year. The fire company also plans two or three boot drives.

In January, the fire company reported it responded to eight calls that include a working house fire in Rush Township, a brush fire, a motor vehicle crash in New Ringgold, an automatic fire alarm in Walker Township, a barn fire, and a landing zone.
