TN Mat Rankings: Feb. 7
As the regular season winds down, attention starts to shift to the postseason.
The girls District 11 tournament will take place Sunday, Feb. 16 at Easton Area Middle School, while the boys D-11 2A and 3A individual tournaments will begin on Friday, Feb. 21 at Freedom and Liberty, respectively, and conclude the following day with finals in both classes at Liberty.
Look for more on the boys and girls tournaments as we get closer to those events.
Lehighton’s Jacob Ferguson enjoyed a stellar postseason a year ago, advancing to states for the first time. Ferguson recently returned from injury and has looked primed for another postseason push, posting an 8-2 record this season, and going 3-0 since Feb. 1.
“I was super excited to get him back,” said Lehighton head coach Floyd Brown after Ferguson went 2-0 at district duals Saturday. “He’s been making his way back, and we’ve been kind of really taking it nice and slow, so today he was able to get two matches in which was good.”
This winter has also seen several wrestlers reach career milestones, as Northwestern’s Luke Fugazzotto, Palmerton’s Derek King and Tamaqua’s Aiden Schlier all hit 100 career wins.
The Tigers also qualified for the PIAA 2A team tournament with a runner-up finish at districts, and head coach Joe Killar’s squad posted a win over Conwell-Egan in the preliminary round at states.
This past weekend, Lehighton’s girls competed at the Upper Dauphin Tournament, where Cassidy Litts earned a second-place finish. Other medalists for the Tribe, who placed seventh out of 29 teams, included Claudia Pagotto (third, 112) and Alivia Reed (fourth, 170).
Pleasant Valley’s Juliette Trout, a state qualifier last season, captured her first league title, winning the 112-pound championship at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tournament Jan. 25. The sophomore did it in dominant fashion, pinning all three of her opponents in the first period.
There have already been plenty of highlights for the boys and girls this year. And there are sure to be many more once the postseason begins.
