Heisler’s co-owner remembered for his kindness
The co-owner of Heisler’s Cloverleaf Dairy in the Lewistown Valley died Sunday.
Leonard W. Ostergaard, 64, of Andreas, was remembered by many as a kind man who was proud of his family’s business.
“He will be remembered standing in the front of the dairy bar cutting banana splits and offering a friendly hello or chat to customers,” according to his obituary.
Ostergaard and his wife of 35 years, Ann (Daukshus), owned and operated Heisler’s. The business was started Ostergaard’s uncle and aunt, Morris and Pearl Heisler in 1957.
The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce said that Ostergaard was a beloved member of the community and owner of the diary bar that is a cornerstone of the local economy and way of life.
“Leonard’s dedication to his family’s business, his employees, and his customers was unmatched. His kindness, work ethic, and commitment to quality have left a lasting legacy in our town,” said Aimee Dotson, the Chamber’s executive director.
“Heisler’s Dairy has been a place of comfort, tradition, and great memories for so many families over the years, and Leonard’s leadership helped shape it into the respected institution it is today,” Dotson continued.
She noted that he was more than just a businessman — he was a friend, mentor and role model.
“His deep care for others was evident in everything he did — whether it was supporting local events, providing excellent service, or simply offering a warm smile to everyone who walked through his door,” Dotson said.
The chamber extended its deepest condolences to Ostergaard’s family and the Heisler’s Dairy team.
“Leonard’s impact on our community will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs and community leaders,” Dotson said. “Rest in peace, Leonard — you will be missed.”
In a Facebook post from Heisler’s Dairy Bar, his family notes that it will plan to continue the tradition of the business despite his passing.
“It was his greatest honor to serve the area and provide entertainment, nostalgia and incredible ice cream,” according to the post.
Many responded to the post, offering condolences or writing that they worked at Heisler’s at one time. Others recalled visits to enjoy ice cream, play miniature golf or meet with family and friends.
State Sen. David G. Argall said he will miss Ostergaard, a man he knew for decades.
“He was a hard worker who expanded his business with his wife and so many dedicated employees over the years,” Argall said. “My wife’s father loved to tell the story of how Leonard’s uncle and aunt took a big risk in first building Heisler’s in the Lewistown Valley. So many people are very happy that they did!”
Despite its remote location, Heisler’s draws thousands from all over each season it is opened.
Ostergaard also served as a Walker Township supervisor several years ago.
According to his obituary, Ostergaard was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed spending time on the beaches of Cape May, New Jersey.
“He had a brilliant scientific mind, but he also enjoyed and appreciated the arts, music and poetry,” the obituary notes.
His obituary appears on page 4 of today’s edition.
