Carbon County has officially given municipal tax collectors a slight pay raise over the next four years.
During the recent county commissioners meeting, the board adopted a new compensation schedule for Carbon County tax collectors who will be elected during the 2025 municipal election and subsequent municipal elections until amended.
The commissioners said the majority of tax collectors are up for election this year.
“The tax collectors sent a letter signed by all the tax collectors requesting a rate increase and price increase on mailing stuff,” Commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko said. “The commissioners did, to the best of our ability, to provide them with that type of increase.”
He added that this needed to be acted on before elections took place because the rates couldn’t be voted on during active campaigns.
Under the new resolution, beginning in 2026, tax collectors will be paid a total of $2,000 for the year.
They will also receive $3.50 per county bill mailed in 2026; $3.55 per bill in 2027; $3.60 for 2028; and $3.65 for 2029.
The county tax collector compensation rates had not been increased in several years.
Deborah Kohler, Weatherly Borough tax collector and secretary of the Carbon County Tax Collectors Association, said that this is a step in the right direction.
The tax collectors in attendance also thanked the board for the redesign of the county tax bills to try and to make it more taxpayer friendly and reduce errors.
