Three area wrestling teams in District 11 duals
Three area wrestling teams will be competing in this weekend’s District 11 Class 2A Dual Championships.
Northwestern, Palmerton and Lehighton have all made the eight-team field for the event, which will be held Saturday at Freedom High School.
The Tigers are seeded second, and will face seventh-seeded Pen Argyl in the quarterfinal round. Northwestern owns a 12-6 record.
The Blue Bombers, with a 10-3 mark, were named the No. 3 seed and will take on sixth-seeded North Schuylkill in their opening match.
Gaining the fourth seed, the Indians (11-6) will match up with No. 5 Pine Grove in the quarters.
The other quarterfinal contest will pit top-seeded Saucon Valley against No. 8 seed Tri-Valley.
The seedings were done by a committee and used numerous criteria to determine their final spots. Among the criteria used were: head-to-head competition, comparative scores with common opponents, tournament placings with respect to quantity and depth of placers in common tournaments, strength of schedule, and other miscellaneous factors.
The 2A quarterfinals are scheduled to start at 9 a.m., with the winners advancing to the semifinal round, which begins at 1 p.m. The finals won’t take place until 7 p.m.
The winner of Northwestern-Pen Argyl faces the survivor of the Palmerton-North Schuylkill match. If Lehighton can defeat the Cardinals, it would face either Saucon or Tri-Valley in the semis.
In 3A, Bethlehem Catholic has earned the top seed, with Nazareth taking the No. 2 spot.
The 3A quarterfinals will take place at 11 a.m., with their semis slated for 3 p.m. Like the 2A finals, the 3A championship match will start at 7 p.m.
