Nesquehoning Borough Council

Nesquehoning Borough Council discussed or acted on the following items during their monthly meeting last week.

• Addressed a resident’s concern regarding vehicles being parked on borough streets for extended periods of time without being moved or shoveled out during the recent snowstorm. Council said it would speak with the police on enforcing snow parking.

• Borough solicitor Robert Yurchak informed council that a request was made to look into creating a zoning ordinance addressing warehouse construction. It was noted that this request came out of the Panther Valley Blueprint Community discussions, because Nesquehoning has land that could be used for warehouse development.

“(Abbie Guardiani) asked if we could consider doing something before we get inundated with warehouse construction,” Yurchak told council.

• Approved a request from Frank Kattner regarding a change in sewer and garbage bills, because the business that utilized these services has been closed.

• Appointed Michael Radocha Jr. to fill the vacancy on the borough water authority. The vote was four approvals and three abstentions due to David Hawk and Paul Kattner being on the authority and Suzanne Smith being employed by the water department. Council had received two letters of interest to fill the vacancy.

• Councilwoman Lois Kuba commended the borough workers for their efforts to keep roads cleared during the last snowstorm.

“It was a fast storm, coming down quite heavy at times,” she said. “I know they had a hard time keeping up with it, and they worked a very, very long day. … I think all the guys, in conjunction with the water authority really did a good job.”

Kuba also thanked the office staff for fielding a lot of calls following the storm.

Councilman Bruce Nalesnik reminded residents that streets are posted during snow events and should be followed for plowing roads.

• Kuba said that another boot drive to raise money for the three borough fire departments is being planned for a weekend in April.

• Officer Carl Breiner passed his civil service exam, and officials can proceed with finalizing his new job description for sergeant. Once it is approved, council can move forward on the promotion.

• Approved the purchase of a 1-ton dump truck for the sewer department at the cost of $40,000.

• Work on the Johnson and Jacobs Memorial Park on West Railroad Street is progressing. The wall has been completed.

• Adopted the tax levy resolution for 2025.

• Adopted resolution waiving the 3% Pennsylvania Municipality Retirement System fee for 2024-2025 for nonuniformed borough employees.
