Bears’ Trout wins EPC title
Juliette Trout didn’t spend a lot of time on the mat Saturday during the East Penn Conference Girls Wrestling Championships.
Instead, the Pleasant Valley sophomore spent nearly as much time on the podium as she did on the mat.
Trout went 3-0 at the event, held at Liberty High School, to win the 112-pound championship. She pinned all three of her opponents in the first period, needing a total of two minutes and 36 seconds of mat time to take the title.
“It’s really nice after putting more work in,” said Trout, who finished second at two recent tournaments. “I’ve been coming up runner-up a lot.”
Trout opened the tournament with a win by fall over Danielle Rivera (Emmaus) in 1:05. In semifinals, she put Parkland’s Saige Rittenhouse on her back in just :21.
In the championship match, Trout showed Jaida Onyango the lights in 1:10 to win the title.
“I stuck to my arm bar,” said Trout. “That’s my go-to move this year, that and the half. It’s been doing me really well. It’s what I think I put everybody in today. It’s my lucky move.”
Pleasant Valley head coach James Weiss wasn’t surprised by Trout’s performance.
“She’s a pinner,” he said. “That’s kind of the expectation. If she’s in a match and she’s in control, I expect her to put people on their back and put up points for the team.”
Trout has been wrestling for 10 years, most of it spent competing against boys.
“Half my life boys were all I wrestled,” she said. “I find it more fun [to wrestle against girls]. It changes the game. Looking back I would have never thought there would be as many girls out there as there are now.”
Trout will now look toward districts and the chance to return to the state tournament. She placed second at districts last year and earned a place at states.
While Trout was the only winner for Pleasant Valley Saturday, two other Bears reached the podium as sophomore Isabella Altemose (170) reached the third-place match, where she pinned Jocelyn Vargas (Emmaus) in 1:47. Junior Josie Fetterman (142) placed fourth at EPCs after falling to Pocono Mountain West’s Glory Jeledo in the third-place match.
PV teammate Lily Decker (235) came one win away from reaching the third-place match, as the senior dropped a 2-1 decision in the consi semifinals.
Pleasant Valley finished 10th as a team at the 14-team event. Parkland won the team title with 154 points, with Easton second at 138.5.
“Almost every single girl won a match, and then I have two first-year wrestlers going up for third and fourth place,” said Weiss. “I can’t be more happy than that.
“Very proud of what the future hold for Pleasant Valley wrestling, especially on the girls side.”
