Police: Woman assaulted, threatened
A Lansford man faces criminal charges for allegedly assaulting and threatening to shoot his girlfriend in her home.
Shaun Ovens, 46, of West Abbott Street, was arraigned Thursday night by District Judge William J. Kissner on charges of terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment.
He was jailed in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $75,000 bail. A preliminary hearing before District Judge Beth Dodson is scheduled for Feb. 5.
According to court papers, the woman came to the Lansford police station Thursday to report that she was assaulted by Ovens and he threatened to shoot her in the face.
She told officers that Ovens showed her a firearm that he purchased from a friend. Ovens is not permitted to possess a firearm as a felon and no firearms were currently registered to him, court papers said.
The woman told police that he accused her of stealing $50 from him, and also cheating on him.
The accusations led to statements that he was going to shoot her in the face, and that he wasn’t afraid of police as, “he would just need more bullets,” court papers said.
The woman said that Ovens pushed her against the wall, held her there and screamed at her, which caused her to be afraid, court papers said.
Officers asked why she didn’t call 911, and she told them that she was afraid Ovens would grab her by the head, as he had done previously, court papers said.
The woman was also afraid because Ovens brought a crystalline substance in her home, which he told her was methamphetamine, court papers said. She told officers that when he has done illegal drugs that he was very violent toward her.
