Train hits truck in Rush Twp.

A Reading Blue Mountain and Northern train struck a tractor-trailer that became stuck at a railroad crossing in Barnesville just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Walmart rig was attempting to travel onto the short, steep and narrow incline of State Road from Route 54 (Pine Creek Drive) that leads to the tracks in Rush Township, despite signs that ban vehicles with trailers over 45 feet in length.

Footage shows that a train traveling in the direction of Tamaqua hit the cab and dragged it and the trailer.

According to reports from the scene, the driver had escaped from the vehicle.

The Reading & Northern Railroad Police are investigating the incident near Golf Road.

The company worked well into the night with a towing company to remove the tractor-trailer and reopen State Road.

In a Facebook post, railroad police reminded truck drivers to never rely on a GPS system for directions and to look out for signs that post truck restrictions.

Furthermore, it asked motorists to always anticipate a train.

“If you’re ever stuck at a crossing please immediately call 911 or call the number on the blue ENS sign located at every crossing to report your vehicle and the location,” railroad police said.

Emergency personnel were on scene of a train versus tractor-trailer crash in Barnesville Thursday. The accident occurred just before 5 p.m. at the railroad crossing along State Road, near Golf Road, just south of Route 54. It appears both drivers escaped injury.
