Palmerton fire crews respond to furnace issue

No one was injured after a passerby reported smoke coming from a twin home in Palmerton Tuesday afternoon.

Borough fire Chief Jason Behler said firefighters responded at 2:49 p.m. to 210 Columbia Ave. after the passerby was driving on the 200 block of Columbia and noticed thick black smoke coming from the chimney and dialed 911.

In turn, Behler said the Carbon County 911 Center called it in as a dwelling fire. However, he said it was no fire at all, but rather, an oil burner malfunction and that the oil furnace probably needed to be serviced.

“The chimney blocked, forced a lot of black smoke,” Behler said, adding that they also checked 212 Columbia Ave.

Behler said there were no injuries.

He said firefighters were on scene for about 45 minutes.

“We needed to check the meters to check CO levels and fans to clear the smoke,” he said.

Also assisting at the scene were the Bowmanstown Fire Company, Aquashicola Fire Company, Walnutport RIT, and Palmerton Ambulance.
