Blue Bombers cruise to fifth consecutive victory
The future continues to look bright for the Palmerton girls basketball team.
The Blue Bombers faced off against Lehigh Valley Academy on Monday in non-league action, and cruised to a 56-26 win.
The contest was memorable for two of their players, as it was Senior Night, and Palmerton upperclassmen Ella Baumgardt and Mikayla Pengelly both left it all on the court.
Pengelly especially enjoyed a successful evening, as she finished as the game’s leading scorer with 15 points.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Bombers, giving them momentum heading into their final games of the regular season.
“It’s nice to get on a winning streak … We’re just trying to take everything practice-by-practice, game-by-game, and we’re just trying to improve each and every day,” Palmerton head coach Jeremy Coleman said. “We’re working on some things, and I’m liking what I’m seeing. I think we’re heading in the right direction.”
The Jaguars, who opened the season 6-1, had a common opponent in Salisbury. Lehigh Valley registered an 11-point win over the Falcons earlier this season, while the Bombers posted a 10-point win over Salisbury.
Based on that, the game looked like it could be an even matchup, but it turned out anything but close.
The Bombers dominated the entirety of the game, ending the first half with a 22-point lead. Pengelly tallied all 15 of her points during the opening quarters to help gain that advantage.
Palmerton received points from five different players in the third period as the margin reached 30.
With only four regular season games left, the Bombers are gearing up for where they can really make waves — the playoffs.
“As long as we keep doing what we’re doing … The team’s excited, I’m excited,” said Coleman. “We have high hopes. We have some goals that we want to reach, so we’ve just got to keep working hard.
“I think we can do some good things. We’re all optimistic, and we’re being positive. We should be good to go when playoff time comes.”
As for the Jaguars, whose wins have come mostly against private schools, and their losses have been suffered to other charter schools, they need one more win in their final five games to clinch a District 11 playoff berth. Their next game is Thursday against Our Lady of the Cross, a team they defeated 54-39 earlier this season.
TOP SCORERS ... Palmerton’s upperclassmen took this game by storm. Pengelly led the Bombers with 15 points, junior Hailey Barry added 14, and junior Courtney Connell ended with 11. For the Jaguars, junior Letizia Maria Buzzi scored a team-high 10 points, while senior Natalia Smith contributed nine.
UP NEXT ... Palmerton heads to Lehighton on Wednesday before traveling to Jim Thorpe on Friday.
