New bins in Rush for recycling, but people can still use old ones

New recycling bins are being dropped off at Rush Township residents’ properties.

“With the new contract, Tamaqua Transfer had to provide the bins,” township Supervisor Robert Leibensperger said.

The bright green bins are smaller than the wheeled and covered recycling containers most residents received under the township’s last contract, which was approved in 2019.

Several residents took to social media wondering how they could fit a week’s worth of recycling in the containers.

But Leibensperger explained that the new bins may be used in conjunction with the “older” containers or any other recycling receptacle.

The new bins should be reserved for glass or metal since they do not have covers.

“It does not matter if they get wet,” Leibensperger said of those recyclables.

Paper and cardboard should be deposited in covered recycling containers.

Supervisors approved a 5-year contract with Tamaqua Transfer for garbage and recycling in June. The contract went into effect this month.

Rush Township residents received new recycling bins but may continue to use their older township-issued ones if they so desire. JILL WHALEN/TIMES NEWS
