Man crashes stolen vehicle on Turnpike
A Bradford County man is facing multiple charges after a high-speed chase and crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Penn Forest Township on Wednesday morning.
State Police from the Troop T Pocono barracks, in an affidavit of a probable cause, reported that the incident began around 8:50 a.m. when a black Nissan sedan, driven by 38-year-old Albert Mario Abuchaibe of Wyalusing, was involved in a hit-and-run crash near the Hickory Run Service Plaza on Interstate 476 southbound.
A black Nissan sedan had struck a commercial motor vehicle, according to charging documents, and the driver fled the scene on foot toward the service plaza. Witnesses described the suspect as a man wearing maroon pants and a dark hooded sweatshirt.
Shortly afterward, police received a report of a stolen white Toyota Corolla from the same service plaza. The vehicle’s owner told investigators she was pumping gas when she was approached by a man matching the description of the hit-and-run suspect. The man asked her for a ride, and when she refused, he forcibly took her car keys from her hand.
The victim, police said, attempted to stop the suspect by grabbing him as he entered her car, but he started the vehicle and began driving away, dragging her approximately 15 to 20 feet. She eventually let go and fell to the ground, sustaining abrasions on her arm, knees, abdomen and back. After the suspect fled southbound on Interstate 476, she sought help at the gas pumps, where she found a cellphone and slipper that the man had dropped.
State Police said they pursued the stolen Toyota Corolla for about 7.5 miles along I-476. The chase ended near mile marker 78.5 when the vehicle crashed into a concrete median. The driver, identified as Abuchaibe, was taken into custody at the scene. He was barefoot at the time of his arrest.
At the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Lehighton, Abuchaibe admitted to being a heroin user and said he was experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Police observed multiple track marks on his neck, consistent with intravenous drug use. He refused to submit to a blood test after being advised of his rights and implied consent warnings.
Police said they reviewed surveillance footage from the Hickory Run Service Plaza, which showed Abuchaibe walking into the plaza from the area of the initial crash. He was wearing maroon pants and a dark hooded sweatshirt, and he was carrying what appeared to be an electronic device. The footage also showed him approaching the victim at her driver’s side door and later fleeing the plaza in her car.
Investigators collected evidence from the scene, including a slipper matching one found inside the victim’s stolen vehicle and a damaged PlayStation 5 that matched a broken piece recovered near the gas pumps. Both the black Nissan sedan and the white Toyota Corolla were processed and photographed as evidence.
Abuchaibe faces numerous charges, including robbery, aggravated assault, theft by unlawful taking, driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving, and illegally operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Abuchaibe was being held at the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz in Jim Thorpe.
