An Upper Mount Bethel Township woman is in jail, charged with animal cruelty offenses and assault on police, after state police at the Belfast barracks responded to a case last weekend in which a horse had to be euthanized and over 20 animals were removed from a residence police said was in “deplorable” condition.
Donna Giello-Turner, 62, was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault to animals, cruelty to animals, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and neglect of animals, and committed to the Northampton County Prison, Easton, in lieu of $25,000 bail.
Police said they were dispatched on Saturday to a property on East Shore Drive in the township for a report of a horse that had been laying in a field near the roadway and found the horse to be in severe distress.
Police said they made contact with Giello-Turner, the homeowner, advising her to have care provided for the horse. When police returned there on Monday, they said, the horse was still in distress without any care provided to it.
They said a search warrant for the property was obtained. Police and a veterinarian made the decision to have the horse euthanized. Police said Giello-Turner told them she thought the horse had died.
During the search, police said a deceased dog was found in a freezer in the home and 22 dogs, a horse, two birds and a cat were seized from the property.
Police said when they tried to arrest Giello-Turner, she kicked an officer during her arrest, according to authorities.
