Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 14

Northwestern and Palmerton both gained multiple Colonial League wins on Tuesday.

The Tigers swept Jim Thorpe in both boys and girls action, while the Bombers did the same against Palisades.

Tamaqua’s swim team also gained a sweep, taking care of Schuylkill Haven.

Other area winners included the Lehighton girls, Panther Valley boys and the Marian boys swimmers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Jim Thorpe

Northwestern built an early lead and cruised to a 56-14 Colonial League win over Jim Thorpe.

Cara Thomas scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter as the Tigers jumped out to a 24-5 start.

Brook Balliet added 17 points to the winning cause, while Ryah Confer paced the Olympians with seven points.

Nine different players scored as Lehighton rolled to a 49-14 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Morgan Costenbader paced the Indians with nine points, while teammates Leah Uyvari and Ryleigh Trotman both chipped in with eight.

The winless Panthers received a game-high 10 points from Maria Bowers.

In Colonial League action, Palmerton got off to a good start and never looked back on its way to a 52-17 victory over Palisades.

The Bombers’ Ella Baumgardt led all scorers with 15 points, while Mikayla Pengelly and Cate Morgan both chipped in with 10. The winners held a 25-3 advantage after the first quarter.

Brooklyn Lucas finished with a team-high nine points for the Pirates.

Catasauqua ended Northern Lehigh’s win streak at seven games, as the Rough Riders gained a 51-47 Colonial League win.

Katelynn Barthold scored 11 of her 13 points in the first quarter, in which the Bulldogs took an early 20-8 lead.

Tegan Simms recorded all 10 of the Bulldogs’ points in the final period and ended with a team-high 26.

The Roughies’ Hailey Jenkins led all scorers with 30 points, while Kaylin Stewart added 11.

Trailing 35-30 after the third quarter, Panther Valley used a 14-6 fourth frame to rally for a 44-41 Schuylkill League win over North Schuylkill.

Logan Fisher poured in a game-high 24 points for the Panthers, including 16 in the second half.

The Spartans were held without a double-figure scorer as Zach Marcinowski led his team with nine points.

Northwestern shrugged off a slow start and scored 54 points in the middle quarters to win 74-33 over Jim Thorpe in Colonial League play.

Shane Marth led the Tigers, who trailed 13-8 after the opening frame, with 16 points. Gavin Nelson and Eli Zimmerman each chipped in 10 for the winners.

Pierce Gothard led all Olympian scorers with 12 points.

The Pirates received a team-high 14 points from Lincoln Cook.

A big second quarter by Catasauqua proved to be the difference as the Roughies registered a 69-52 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Frankie Pujols shined for the winners, who outscored the Bulldogs 28-14 in the second frame, with 27 points. Jeremiah Cotie added 12 points for Catty.

Kellen Bauer paced the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Coy Daubert added 14.

Marian and Mahanoy Area finished with a split in Schuylkill League action.

The Colts posted a 34-14 win, while the Golden Bears edged the Fillies 57-53.

Michael Strucko and Andrew Metters touched the wall first in multiple events. Strucko won both the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, while Metters took the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Lydia Strucko and Zoe Katona also posted two individual firsts. Strucko won both the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, while Katona captured the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Tamaqua registered a sweep in Schuylkill League action against Schuylkill Haven.

The Blue Raider boys posted a 93-39 win, while the Tamaqua girls finished with a 102-70 victory.

Jacob Hehn (50 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly) and Vincenzo Valentine (diving, 100 breaststroke) led the Blue Raider boys with multiple firsts.

In the girls meet, Kate Behun (200 freestyle, 50 freestyle) and Audrey Nattress (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) each captured two events.

Jason Ahn also tallied 16 points for PV, while the Raiders received a team-high 11 points from Gavin Edmonds.

Tamaqua-North Schuylkill

Tamaqua posted a 40-25 victory over North Schuylkill.

Gavin Edmonds paced the Raiders with 12 points, while Perkins and Hannon both scored six to lead the Spartans.

Jim Thorpe-Catasauqua

Jim Thorpe doubled up Catasauqua for a 34-17 victory.

Aliciana Aponte scored 12 points for the Olympians, while Olivia Snisky finished with 11.

Pine Grove-Panther Valley

Panther Valley ran away with a 20-6 win over Pine Grove.

The Panthers’ Kathryn Breslin netted a game-high 15 points.

Weatherly-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain recorded a 33-23 victory over Weatherly.

The Wreckers’ Katie Knock led all scorers with 10 points, while Mikayla Pugh finished with six.

Avery Kirby and Haley Banonis both scored eight points to lead the Eagles.

7th Grade

Jim Thorpe-Catasauqua

Catasauqua knocked off Jim Thorpe 15-9.

Leah Hartmen paced the Olympians with seven points.

Weatherly-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain edged Weatherly, 28-24.

The Eagles’ Quinn Bonner led all scorers with eight points. Riley Bachart finished with six points to pace the Wreckers.
