Palmerton knocks off Salisbury
Palmerton’s girls basketball team has obvious chemistry, both on and off the court.
It’s a quality that has been a main component in the Bombers’ dominating performance this season, and something that helped them secure a 49-39 Colonial League victory over Salisbury on Monday.
“The team chemistry has certainly gotten better, and we’re working well together, passing the ball,” Palmerton head coach Jeremy Coleman said. “We don’t have any selfish players on the team. Everyone’s trying to make each other better, so that makes for a good team culture and a good team environment.”
The Bombers dominated the Falcons in the first half, seamlessly passing the ball and rarely missing shots. At halftime, Palmerton led 36-15.
However, the Falcons took the second half by storm, outscoring Palmerton 24-13 over the final two quarters, including 15-3 in the final frame, putting them 10 points behind the Bombers at the conclusion of the contest.
“It ended up being a little closer than I would’ve liked, so we’ve got to do a little better job at finishing games,” Coleman said. “We got off to a hot start, but we’ve got to play a complete game.”
The Bombers have been effective in passing the ball and collaborating with one another to achieve their main goal: defeating their opponents. This tactic proved effective in their win over Salisbury, in which six of Palmerton’s 11 players contributed to the score.
And that balanced attack was evident Monday.
The Bombers have had a successful season thus far, roaring out to a 13-3 record. Their three losses? Two heartbreaking setbacks of 43-41 to Northwestern Lehigh and 40-37 to Notre Dame-Green Pond, as well as a 38-29 loss to Nazareth.
In each of those games, Palmerton kept the deficit under 10 points. The Bombers’ efforts have brought them back to a winning streak, with the victory over Salisbury their third in a row.
“I expected us to play well. We’ve been playing well so far … It’s always good to get a win,” said Coleman. “I think they’ve adjusted to me better and some of our new plays, so we’re starting to kind of iron some of those out and run those a little bit more effectively and efficiently.”
The Falcons have not had the same success that the Bombers have this season, their record being 3-10. Despite their several losses, the Falcons’ hard fight against the Bombers can most certainly be considered a moral victory.
With many of their scorers being underclassmen, it’s likely that Salisbury will be a strong competitor in the Colonial League in upcoming years.
LEADING SCORERS ... Palmerton’s starting lineup scored nearly all of its 49 points. Junior Courtney Connell led the team with 13, senior Ella Baumgardt added 10, and both junior Hailey Barry and senior Mikayla Pengelly each scored nine. Baumgardt and Barry also both hit three three-pointers. For the Falcons, junior Kendra Morgan scored 17 points, nearly half their team total. Freshman Sophia Gunning added nine, and sophomore Izabella Gonzalez chipped in with six.
UP NEXT ... The Falcons face off against Notre Dame-Green Pond (11-3) at home today, while the Bombers travel to Palisades (1-10).
