Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 11

Palmerton and Lehighton both posted Colonial League victories in boys and girls basketball games on Saturday.

The Blue Bomber teams defeated Pen Argyl, while the Indian squads downed Southern Lehigh.

The Marian and Weatherly boys, as well as the Panther Valley girls, also registered weekend wins.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pen Argyl-Palmerton

Cameron Pengelly scored 10 of his team-high 13 points in the third quarter to help Palmerton pull away from Pen Argyl for a 42-29 Colonial League victory.

The Blue Bombers, who have won three of their last four games, also received nine points from Corey Serfass.

Cayden Vishnesky paced the winless Green Knights with a game-high 14 points.

Lehighton jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 73-54 Colonial League victory over visiting Southern Lehigh.

Joe Roth scored eight of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter as the Indians, winners of nine straight, raced to a 24-5 advantage.

Cole Dietz, who hit four three-pointers, aided the Lehighton cause with 19 points while Blake Roberts and John Light both chipped in with eight.

The Spartans received a team-high 14 points from Morgan Capuano.

Blue Mountain-Marian

Marian used a big second half to erase a double-digit deficit and gain a 48-47 non-league victory over visiting Blue Mountain.

Dominic Catrone scored all 13 of his points during the final two quarters to help the Colts outscore the Eagles 33-19 and move above the .500 mark. Catrone also pulled down 14 rebounds and handed out five assists.

The winners also received 10 points from Gregory Tirpak, while Justin DeLaCruz and Rocco Griguoli both finished with eight.

For Blue Mountain, Tyeirre Meade and Aidan Grace tied for team honors with 12 points.

A big third quarter helped Weatherly pull away from Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech for a 62-37 non-league victory.

Ian McKeegan scored eight of his 17 points in the third frame as the Wreckers outscored the Rams 22-6 to extend what was a nine-point halftime lead.

The winners received a game-high 21 points from Niko Saldukas, while Corbin Wagner also contributed 12.

Vo-Tech was led by Andrew Molick’s eight points.

Courtney Connell scored a game-high 20 points to help power Palmerton to a key 58-37 Colonial League win over host Pen Argyl.

Connell tallied 11 of her points in the first half as the Blue Bombers built a commanding 31-13 halftime lead.

Mikayla Pengelly added 11 points to the winning cause, while Ella Baumgardt chipped in with nine.

The Green Knights received a team-high 17 points from Julia Vargo.

Uyvari scored a game-high 17 points, including five in the opening quarter as the winners jumped out to a 16-6 start.

The Tribe’s Ryleigh Trotman and Emma Repsher both added 10 points, while Piper Gluck topped the Spartans with seven points.

Orsulak, who helped the Panthers gain a 38-6 halftime advantage, finished with 14 points.

Lucy Kocha ended with a game-high 16 points for PV, which snapped a three-game losing streak, while Natalie Vermillion chipped in with nine.

Hailey Jenkins poured in a game-high 26 points as Catasauqua pulled away from visiting Jim Thorpe for a 54-40 Colonial League victory.

Jenkins tallied seven of her points in the second quarter as the Rough Riders used a 13-3 period to break a tie score.

The winners also received 11 points from Shaziya Roberts, while the Olympians were led by 19 points from Ryah Confer. Thorpe’s Brianna Snisky and Brooklynn Yuhas also chipped in with eight points apiece.

Abby Wilson scored seven of her 10 points in the first quarter as the Panthers built a 16-1 first-quarter lead.

The winners were led by Paige Kreidler and Giana Kasper, who both scored 14 points.

Kelly Reiner topped the Wreckers with 10 points.

Northwestern-Palmerton

In a key Colonial League contest, which was held on Friday, Northwestern gained a 41-27 victory over Palmerton.

The Tigers fell behind 16-6 before reeling off four consecutive pins.

The falls during that stretch came from Luke Fugazzotto (189), Jackson Bailey (215), Jackson Huber (285) and Logan Uricchio (107).

Northwestern also received a pin from William Turner (145) and a technical fall from Chase Sukanick (133).

For the Blue Bombers, Jameson Trainer (160), Dillon Anthony (172) and Colton Becker (121) all delivered pins.

Palmerton competed at the Big Red Individuals at Souderton.

Skylar Benninger and Cassidy Merkel both posted 2-2 marks for the Blue Bombers, who placed 29th in the team standings.

Both wins by Benninger (130) and Merkel (124) came via pin.
