Slaters slip past Lehighton
It was a Colonial League contest that came down to the wire.
The Lehighton and Bangor girls basketball teams were neck and neck for four quarters.
In the end, the Slaters were able to regain a lead and maintain it in order to claim a 35-34 win over the Indians on Thursday.
The first two minutes of the final quarter were scoreless, but with 5:17 left in the game, Lehighton’s Morgan Costenbader broke the tie with a foul shot to give the Indians a 27-26 advantage.
Bangor’s Aubrie Labar found herself on the foul line just moments later, and made both of her shots to take back the Slater lead at 28-27. The teams would go back-and-forth several times before Bangor seized control.
Both teams ran into foul trouble in the final frame, as they exceeded five fouls, sending each other to the free-throw line multiple times.
Down 35-30, Lehighton’s Leah Uyvari delivered a basket that added some intensity to the contest in the final minute. With under 10 seconds left, Ryleigh Trotman scored another two points for the Indians to make the score 35-34.
But that was as close as the Tribe would come, as Bangor held on for the win.
The contest began with a quick basket from Bangor’s LaBar. Uyvari responded with a layup to set the tone for the tight game that was to come. The first minutes showed a pair of teams who were evenly matched and eager to come away with a win.
Lehighton’s fouling in the first quarter assisted Bangor in taking the lead. Kaylynn Figurski of Bangor put up four points from foul shots to help the Slaters go ahead 11-9.
In the second quarter, the game settled down. Bangor’s Avery Nelson showed her leadership on the court and was able to put up her first three-pointer.
Aryanna Arzuaga checked into the game for Lehighton, and her two baskets made her the top scorer of the quarter for the Indians. Both teams scored seven points in the second, which allowed Bangor to keep their lead at 18-16 going into the half.
Lehighton flipped a switch early in the third quarter. The Indians were more aggressive toward the basket and quicker on the court. One minute into the stanza, Lehighton’s Morgan Costenbader popped a deep three-pointer to give the Indians their first lead at 19-18.
Following Costenbader, Trotman put up another three-pointer for the Indians to improve their advantage to 22-18. Costenbader and Trotman were the only scorers for the Indians in the quarter.
But Bangor was able to prevent the Indians from getting out of its grasp, as Nelson hit again from distance.
Bangor also kept Lehighton from getting easy points by not fouling in the period. With 1:40 left in the third, Nelson added a basket for the Slaters to tie the game 26-26.
LEADING SCORERS ... Bangor’s Nelson was the leading scorer with 17 points. Labar added seven for the Slaters. Lehighton’s Uyvari and Trotman each finished with nine.
COLONIAL LEAGUE ... In the league, the Indians now stand at 3-7. Lehighton will face some challenging Colonial League teams in the coming weeks in Northwestern, Palmerton, and Northern Lehigh.
