Pl. Valley assures parents amid nationwide student data hack

The Pleasant Valley School District informed its students’ parents Thursday night of a nationwide hack of a product it uses.

The nationwide breach is of a company called Power School, which makes a product of the same name that is a student information system.

At the school board meeting on Thursday evening, Superintendent James Konrad explained that the data breach had occurred and that families were notified. He said that the school district does not store the Social Security numbers of students on the Power School product. Instead, the school district assigns a number to each student.

“As we hear additional information of how it impacts our students and families, we will certainly communicate that out,” Konrad said. “I related to the board this evening that right now they (Power School) are doing their forensic analysis on the depth of the breach, but we don’t know how that directly impacts Pleasant Valley School District, so obviously more is forthcoming.”

Konrad encouraged parents to “take a look at if you see suspicious emails or phone calls, just be a little bit mindful because we don’t know where it could be coming from.” He reiterated, “Again this is not our district, this is Power School, which is a product that our district utilizes.”
