Launch set for fire station in Schuylkill

The Friendship Fire Company No. 1 is launching a campaign to raise $6 million for a new fire station in Orwigsburg.

The campaign kickoff will be held at noon Jan. 24 at the fire station, 121 N. Liberty St.

According to the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce, the campaign aims to raise $6 million to fund the new fire station and enhance the department’s ability to serve Orwigsburg Borough and the 25 municipalities within its service area.

The new two-story fire station will provide much-needed space, safety features and modern amenities to support the department’s lifesaving work. With an emphasis on firefighter health and safety, the design includes a cutting-edge air exchange system to remove harmful diesel fumes, and a fully equipped wash area to clean and decontaminate gear after service calls. The upgrades are vital for reducing exposure to cancer-causing carcinogens and other hazardous materials commonly encountered in the fire and rescue field.

The new facility will allow the department to meet and exceed minimum fire safety standards.

The department has already made significant strides in the planning process, having applied for various state and federal funding opportunities, and is working with a local architect on the conceptual design.

The Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce and the department invites all community members, local businesses and supporters to attend the media launch event and learn more about how they can contribute to the capital campaign.
