Heavy winds continue

Ferocious winds are expected to continue today, with the potential for minimal snowfall likely on its way early Saturday morning.

In the span of overnight Wednesday into early this morning, some wind gusts reached as high as 40 to 50 mph, according to Dan Pydynowski a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.

The highest officially recorded wind gust in that time frame was 58 mph in Mount Pocono, said Pydynowski, who added that the elevated wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph were expected to continue into early this evening.

Fortunately, Pydynowski said a reprieve from the blustery conditions is soon on the way as it won’t be nearly as windy throughout much of the day Friday.

“The winds are going to diminish late tonight into Friday morning,” Pydynowski said. “It will still be a little breezy Friday morning, but the intensity of the winds are going to slack.”

Pydynowski said that figures to be the trend throughout the day on Friday.

“The winds will continue to gradually diminish, and it’s going to be pretty calm,” he said. “So, one more really, really windy day, then the trend will be diminishing.”

However, Pydynowski wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a light snowfall overnight Friday into early Saturday morning.

“It doesn’t look like a huge snowfall for us,” he said, adding that some snow could arrive around 2 or 3 Saturday morning. “By late Saturday morning, the snow could be gone; it’s not going to last too long.”

Pydynowski said it should result in probably a coating to an inch, maybe 2 inches on ridge tops or elevated areas.

“It’s not a huge event in terms of accumulation, but if you’re heading out Saturday morning going somewhere, the roads could have some snow on them and some slick areas.”

With temperatures expected to be in the 20s overnight Friday into Saturday morning, Pydynowski said the snow that does fall is gong to stick on areas that aren’t cleared or treated.

Once we get past this weekend, Pydynowksi said Sunday and Monday look to be dry, and temperatures are expected to go above freezing.

“Relatively speaking, it will feel a little better out there,” he said, adding that another cold blast is expected to return by the middle of next week, including Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures back again to the 20s as we’ve been experiencing of late. “As far as any snowfalls, it doesn’t look to be anything significant in the offing over the next week or so.”
