Pedestrian killed on New Year’s Day

State police at the Hazleton barracks reported Tuesday a pedestrian was struck by a car and killed on Jan. 1 on Interstate 80 in Butler Township.

The accident happened at 10:13 p.m. at mile marker 259.6. Police said the pedestrian was unable to be positively identified on the scene due to the extent of injuries.

Police said the victim had exited a vehicle and was walking across both lanes of travel when struck in the right lane by a 2021 Kia Forte driven by Austin T. McGhee, 23, of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The pedestrian was located along the left shoulder, partially in the left lane, they said.

Police said it was discovered on the scene that a crash had occurred prior to the pedestrian being struck, with a vehicle having been located down an embankment.
