Retired art teacher spruces up veterinary office

A large front window at the Brodheadsville Veterinary Clinic was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with a birch tree, snow-capped mountains and a forest of evergreens.

The mural is the work of Dennis Thatcher, Saylorsburg, who is putting the finishing touches on the wintry scene.

It’s meant to lift the spirits of those who visit the clinic, or even those who pass by while traveling on Route 209, said his daughter, Britney Searles.

“We see a lot of sadness during the holidays. An old pet that just can’t make it to Christmas Day, a devastated owner who lost a friend sooner than expected, etc.,” said Searles, a clinic employee. “It’s nice to have something else to focus on, and that goes for us employees, too. It’s difficult to keep our chins up at times.”

Searles has a background in art, but since she’s often busy at her desk or with the furry patients, she asked her father — a retired art teacher — if he could help.

Thatcher readily agreed, and stopped by the clinic with paints and brushes.

“He is 10 times better than me,” Searles said of his talent.

For the most part, she said, the mural is done.

Thatcher might add some finishing touches, including different species of wildlife.

“I’ve see him do many amazing things and beautiful paintings and murals, but this is a whole new level,” Searles said.

The mural will remain at the clinic throughout the winter season.
