Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 4
No less than 12 area wrestlers posted perfect records during tournaments over the weekend.
In addition to the individual success, Pleasant Valley captured a team title at the South Williamsport Mountaineer Invitational.
Palmerton and Tamaqua both picked up boys basketball wins, while the Northern Lehigh and Panther Valley girls were also victorious.
BOYS WRESTLING
Lehighton
Indian Duals
Lehighton, Jim Thorpe and Panther Valley all participated in the Lehighton Indian Duals.
The Indians posted a 4-1 mark, defeating East Stroudsburg South (42-27), Panther Valley (78-0), North Schuylkill (41-29) and Governor Mifflin (41-27), while falling to Manheim Central (46-28).
Konner Nalesnik (160 pounds), Connor Dugan (133) and Lukas Croizier (145) all went 5-0 for Lehighton. All five wins by Nalesnik came via pin, while Dugan compiled four falls and a major. Croizier had three pins during the Duals.
The Olympians went 3-2 during the competition, earning wins over East Stroudsburg North (42-35), Panther Valley (65-6) and East Stroudsburg South (40-32). Their losses came to Governor Mifflin (47-27) and North Schuylkill (48-19).
Thorpe’s Aiden Sterling (215), Nikolas Schwartz (172), Christopher Jacobacci (121) and Stephen Korte (215) all ended the day with 5-0 marks. Sterling’s five wins were all by pins, while Schwartz and Jacobacci both had three falls during the day. Korte added a pin and two tech falls.
For the Panthers, who went 0-5, Josue Morciglio had a 3-2 mark with a pair of pins.
South Williamsport
Mountaineer
Invitational
Pleasant Valley crowned three champions, and also gained the team title at the South Williamsport Mountaineer Invitational.
Shawn Radcliffe (114), Aldin Vukel (189) and Evan Gillespie (215) all captured first in their respective weight class, helping the Bears top the 15-team field with 194.5 points. Williamson placed second with 179.
Radcliffe gained a pin in the quarterfinals, and decisions in the semis and finals to earn his gold. Vukel went a perfect 4-0, posting pins in all four of his matches including a 1:26 fall in the title match. Gillespie needed just two wins to earn his title, registering a fall and a tech fall.
Lorenzo Demaio (121), Jason Kays (145) and Andrew Mihalichko (285) all reached the finals for PV, but fell during the championship round.
Other Bears to medal included Victor Custodio (127, 3rd), Adis Vukel (172, 4th), Frank Lucarello (107, 7th) and Preston Snyder (160, 8th).
Mats on the Mecca
Northern Lehigh competed at the Mats on the Mecca Duals over the weekend at Martz Hall.
Noah Gosart (114), Cody Mazzocca (121), Zachary Gosart (139), Mason Rothrock (160) and Cyrus Kinchen (285) all posted records of 3-1 at the tournament. All five Bulldogs had two pins among their wins.
Nolehi’s team finished 2-2 with wins over Williams Valley (42-29) and host Pottsville (48-30). Its losses came to Ephrata (24-48) and Germantown Academy (21-49).
Germantown Academy finished the duals with a perfect 6-0 mark.
Parkland
Winter Duals
Northwestern’s Luke Fugazzotto capped the Parkland Winter Duals with a perfect 6-0 mark.
The Tigers’ 189-pounder not only finished undefeated in his matches, but scored a pin in every match. Four of his falls came in less than a minute.
Northwestern’s Weston Killar added a 5-1 record, as the 114-pounder ended with two pins, two decisions and a forfeit.
Teammates Braydon Uricchio (127) and Nolan Koehler (152) both finished 4-2 during the Duals.
The Tigers, as a team, went 3-3 with wins over West Chester Rustin (41-29), Bangor (42-27) and Delaware Valley (43-26). The losses were to Northampton (52-12), Boyertown (53-9) and Parkland (35-33).
Hawk Mountain Duals
Tamaqua posted a 3-2 mark while competing at the Hawk Mountain Duals in Hamburg.
The Blue Raiders defeated host Hamburg (45-27), Trinity (37-30) and Overbrook (63-0), while falling to Southern Columbia (50-21) and Carlisle (50-18).
Tamaqua’s Jacob Hehn turned in an impressive showing, going 5-0 at 189. Hehn posted four pins and added a tech fall.
Levi Kunkel (121) and Aiden Schlier (127) both finished 4-1 during the action. Kunkel collected two pins and a tech fall, while Schlier had a pair of falls.
Of the 10 teams that participated, Conestoga Valley went a perfect 5-0.
GIRLS WRESTLING
Parkland Duals
Panther Valley competed in the Parkland Duals Sunday.
The Panthers suffered setbacks against Pocono Mountain East (48-30) in the quarters, and fell to Pennsbury 39-34 in the consolation semifinals.
Freedom topped Panther Valley 47-23 in the seventh-place match.
Brenda Banks and Alisa Williams each went 3-0 for the Panthers. Banks picked up three forfeits, while Williams registered three pins.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Northwestern-NDGP
In a match-up of undefeated Colonial League teams, Notre Dame used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Northwestern for a 68-52 victory.
Isaiah Miles scored a game-high 23 points for the Crusaders, who outscored the Tigers 22-12 in the final period.
Northwestern received a team-high 18 points from Mason Bollinger, while Eli Zimmerman and Gavin nelson both chipped in with eight.

Palmerton ended a four-game losing streak by edging North Schuylkill 46-44 in a non-league contest.
Corey Serfass and Logan Anthony accounted for 37 of the Blue Bombers’ points, as Serfass tallied 19 and Anthony scored 18.
The Spartans, who led after three quarters, but were outscored 17-12 in the final period, received a team-high 18 points from Jude Maziekas.

Noah Mateyak poured in a game-high 27 points to help Tamaqua win its second straight game, a 75-56 non-league victory over Nativity.
The Blue Raiders used a big 23-10 fourth quarter to extend a narrow lead into a decisive margin.
Cooper Ansbach added 13 points to the Tamaqua cause, while Trey Keating paced Nativity with 14 points.

Katelynn Barthold scored half of her team’s points to lead Northern Lehigh to a 54-40 non-league victory over Kutztown.
Barthold finished with 27 points to help the Bulldogs erase a halftime deficit and win their third game in a row.
Tegan Simms added 13 points for the winners, while Kutztown received a team-high 14 points from Riley Derstine.

Panther Valley won its third straight game to move above the .500 mark, defeating Pleasant Valley 50-14 in non-league action.
Natalie Vermillion led the Panthers with 15 points — all of them coming on three-pointers — while Morgan Orsulak added 11 points and eight rebounds.
The winners, who held a 31-7 lead by halftime, also received 11 points and five steals from Lucy Kocha, and another 11 points from Ajete Gjoca.
Amaya Fuentes paced Pleasant Valley with seven points.

Salisbury-Tamaqua
Tamaqua and Salisbury swam to a split.
The Blue Raider girls gained a 111-59 win, while the Falcon boys earned a narrow 59-54 victory.
Vincenzo Valentine and Savannah Wilson both posted multiple individual wins for Tamaqua. Valentine won the diving and 100 breaststroke in the boys meet, while Wilson touched the wall first in both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
Other Raider individual wins came from Ben Hunsicker (100 free), Sophia Sitlinger (diving), Audrey Nattress (100 fly), Ava Jones (100 free) and Kate Behun (100 back).
