Norman P. Mertz, chief of police in Mahoning Township, reported all-time high accident and criminal records for the township in 1964 in his annual report to the supervisors.

He said 65 accidents were investigated in the township during the past year, including 25 on Route 209, 14 on Route 443, nine on Route 902 and 17 on other roads in the municipality.

The crashes resulted in 44 persons being injured and one person having been killed.

Mertz said a record 49 criminal arrests were made last year, including some for burglary, larceny, malicious mischief, aggravated assault, pointing a deadly weapon and involuntary manslaughter, among other violations.
