State police covering Coaldale calls

Due to the recent resignations of several Coaldale Police Department officers, Pennsylvania State Police will be handling calls in the borough.

The arrangement will likely be temporary — and Coaldale Borough Council expects to discuss the matter at its next monthly meeting, council President Claire Remington said Monday.

“Currently we have some perspectives for police protection in our town,” Remington said.

Additional resignations from the department are also possible, and will be addressed at the 7 p.m. Jan. 14 meeting at council chambers in Coaldale Borough Hall, 221 Third St.

“We are hoping to rebuild our department,” Remington explained.

As for the state police, Remington said the agency has served as the borough’s “backup” responder when local police are unavailable.

The agency is needed for assistance since Coaldale lost two full-time officers and one part-time officer in recent months.

Former Police Chief Joseph Krebs resigned in September to take a position with the Tamaqua Police Department.

Earlier this month, Michael Sniscak, a full-time officer, and Kevin Soberick, a part-timer, submitted their resignations.

Council had previously planned to move some of its meetings to the Coaldale Complex but will remain at council chambers due to better security.
