2024 in review: Trump leads GOP tsunami in coverage area
Led by the revival of President-elect Donald Trump, the Republican Party scored convincing wins in the 2024 General Election on Nov. 5, with the Times News coverage area results being aligned in almost-identical fashion as other areas of the country.
Trump will return to the White House next month after defeating Democrat Kamala Harris, with Pennsylvania playing a key role in the election, where Trump won 3,543,308 to 3,423,042.
His “top of the ticket” was also key to Republicans’ wins in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives’ races, while the GOP incumbents prevailed in three statewide row office contests and in seven of eight Pennsylvania House of Representatives races in the Times News coverage area.
As for the presidential race, Trump won four of the five counties in the Times News area: Carbon — 23,708 to 11,394; Monroe — 42,676 to 42,007; Northampton — 89,817 to 86,655; and Schuylkill — 51,665 to 20,882. Harris won only in Lehigh among our area counties — 96,317 to 91,207.
U.S. Senate
Meanwhile, Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey’s 18-year career ended with a defeat to Republican Dave McCormick, 3,399,295 to 3,384,150.
McCormick won three TN counties: Carbon — 22,603 to 11,580; Northampton — 85,787 to 84,762; and Schuylkill — 48,553 to 22,224. Casey prevailed in Lehigh County — 94,875 to 87,147; and Monroe County — 41,707 to 40,72.
Congress
In the balloting for U.S. House of Representatives, two incumbent Democrats also fell victim to the Republican wave. Rep. Susan Wild lost to Ryan Mackenzie in the 7th District, while Rep. Matt Cartwright was defeated by Rob Bresnahan in the 8th District. In the 9th District, incumbent Rep. Dan Meuser was reelected, making it a GOP sweep of our three House races.
In the 7th, Mackenzie won by a margin of 203,688 to 199,626, with Carbon County being the difference. In Carbon, Mackenzie won by a margin of 22,813 to 11,614, while he also won in Monroe, 5,015 to 2,409. Wild won in Lehigh and Northampton, 98,017 to 89,350 and 87,589 to 86,510, respectively.
The 8th District balloting saw Bresnahan win by a margin of 195,663 to 189,411. Part of the district is in Monroe County, where Cartwright was favored by a 41,188 to 35,013 difference.
Meuser more than doubled-up on Democrat Amanda Waldman in the 9th District, winning 276,212 to 115,523. The district includes Schuylkill County, where the congressman won by a margin of 52,039 to 20,206.
State row offices
The Republican Party’s triumphs didn’t stop at the federal level, as its three state row office candidates all won over their Democratic challengers.
In the attorney general’s race, where there was no incumbent, Dave Sunday won over Eugene DiPasquale, 3,496,679 to 3,179,376.
Incumbent Auditor General Tim DeFoor prevailed over challenger Malcolm Kenyatta, 3,489,652 to 3,135,412.
And state Treasurer Stacy Garrity completed her party’s sweep with a win over Erin McClelland, 3,542,336 to 3,115,393.
State House
Seven Republicans prevailed in eight Pennsylvania House of Representatives’ election races in the General Election of 2024.
Carbon County’s representative, Doyle Heffley, was unopposed in the campaign and collected 28,006 complimentary votes in 122nd Legislative District balloting, while the lone Democratic winner was Rep. Maureen Madden, who defeated Republican Matt Long in the 115th District that is in Monroe County. That margin was 15,955 to 13,894.
Meanwhile, the seven GOP victors, besides Heffley, included five incumbents. Here’s a look at the results in those districts:
116th District (includes parts of Schuylkill County) — Rep. Dane Watro defeated Deborah Adoff, 15,237 to 5,72.
123rd District (Schuylkill County) — Rep. Tim Twardzik defeated Michael Zvalaren, 23,371 to 8,686.
124th District (Schuylkill County) — Rep. Jamie Barton defeated Tina Burns, 24,236 to 9,562.
176th District (Monroe County) — Rep. Jack Rader defeated Hope Christman, 21,429 to 12,576.
183rd District (includes parts of Lehigh County) — Rep. Zach Mako defeated Joe Lenzi, 25,688 to 13,503.
187th District (includes parts of Lehigh County) — Gary Day, a former state representative, defeated Stefanie Rafes, 21,994 to 17,738. There was no incumbent in this race.
