Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 27-28
Four area teams posted wins in tournament consolation games over the weekend.
The Jim Thorpe and Northwestern boys, as well as the Palmerton and Northern Lehigh girls, all rebounded from opening-round losses with victories.
Elsewhere, three area wrestlers earned tournament titles. Luke Fugazzotto of Northwestern won at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic, while Palmerton’s duo of Derek King and Dillon Lombardi captured their respective weight classes at the Governor Mifflin tourney.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Jim Thorpe-MMI Prep
Jim Thorpe ended its four-game losing streak with a 39-22 victory over MMI Prep in the consolation game of the Marian Catholic Christmas Tournament.
Pierce Gothard posted 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, when the Olympians outscored the Preppers 18-10.
Thorpe teammate Aaron Curran chipped in with nine points.
Jandel Figueroa topped the Preppers with 13 points.

Northwestern-Nazareth
Northwestern rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 71-52 victory over Nazareth in the consolation game of the Zephyr Holiday Classic.
Gavin Nelson, who made the All-Tournament team, led four Tigers in double-figure scoring. Nelson finished with a game-high 21 points, while Mason Bollinger added 17.
The winners also received 16 from Shane Marth and 12 from Eli Zimmerman.
Gavin Kerschner, who also made the All-Tournament team, tallied 13 points to lead the Eagles.

Palmerton-Stroudsburg
A strong third quarter helped Stroudsburg gain a 47-42 non-league win over Palmerton in a game played at Pocono Mountain West.
The Mounties, who erased a halftime deficit with a 21-13 third frame, received a game-high 13 points from Kameron Knight.
Logan Anthony topped the Blue Bombers with 12 points, while Cameron Pengelly and Brady Reph both chipped in with eight.

Northern Lehigh-ES South
In the consolation game of the Lady Indian Holiday Classic, Northern Lehigh cruised to a 69-14 win over East Stroudsburg South.
Katelynn Barthold drained 17 of her game-high 23 points in the first half, in which the Bulldogs took a commanding 47-9 halftime lead.
The winners also received 18 points from Tegan Simms.
Kimora Woods paced the Cavaliers with five points.

Palmerton-PM West
In the consolation game of the Pocono Mountain West Christmas Tournament, Palmerton got back in the win column with a 42-20 victory over the host Panthers.
Courtney Connell scored seven of her game-high 13 points in the first half, as the Bombers took a 24-9 halftime lead.
Hailey Barry drained seven of her 12 points in the opening half for the winners.
PM West received six points from both Mia Bowden and Emma Campusano.

Natalie Vermillion’s 22-point performance helped Panther Valley gain a 53-41 non-league win over visiting Salisbury.
Vermillion accounted for most of her points by hitting seven three-pointers.
Lucy Kocha hit double figures for the first time this season, as she contributed 12 points, while teammate Morgan Orsulak added 10.
The Falcons were paced by Kendra Morgan, who scored a team-high 17 points.

BOYS WRESTLING
Governor Mifflin
Holiday Tournament
Palmerton registered a second-place team finish, and also crowned two individual champions in Derek King and Dillon Lombardi.
The Bombers compiled 162 team points to finish runner-up to Souderton, who had 197.
King scored a win by injury default over Tri-Valley’s Noah Hanlon to grab the title in the 152-pound bracket. Lombardi gained a narrow 9-8 decision over Manheim Township’s Leighton Underwood to win the 172-pound title.
Both Bombers finished a perfect 4-0 during the tourney. Lombardi posted two tech falls, a decision and a pin. King finished with a decision, a tech fall, a pin and a win by injury default.
Palmerton’s Thomas Pasqueriello (107) and Josh Merkel (127) both placed fourth, while Vincent Taglieri (139) and Dillon Anthony (160) each ended in fifth place.
Bethlehem Holiday Classic
Luke Fugazzotto went 5-0 and captured the 189-pound championship at the Bethlehem Holiday Classic.
Fugazzotto opened the tourney with pins in the first two rounds, and followed them with a tech fall in the quarterfinals. After a tight 4-1 decision over Noah MacIlroy of Freedom in the semis, he gained an identical 4-1 score over Brayden Zuercher of Nazareth in the finals.
Colby Townley added a fifth place at 145 for the Tigers. Townley went 4-2, including two falls in a 1-0 decision in the fifth-place match.
Easton won the team title, while Northwestern finished 16th out of the 30-team field.
