Tamaqua taking down blighted buildings for Liberty Tree park

Tamaqua will receive a tree that’s descended from the last remaining “Liberty Tree.”

And to house the tree, the borough will create Liberty Tree Park on North Railroad Street.

The sapling will come from the America250PA’s Liberty Tree Project, which is meant to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday. The project is awarding one tree to each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties through a competitive process.

Liberty trees were used as symbolic meeting places for the “Sons of Liberty” in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Tamaqua will plant its tree — a descendant of the last remaining tree in Annapolis, Maryland — in the fall of 2025.

The Tamaqua Area Community Partnership Inc. and Tamaqua SOS (Save Our Station) recently acquired two blighted properties along North Railroad Street.

The former homes at 31 and 39 N. Railroad St. were turned over to the Borough of Tamaqua and will be leveled to make room for the proposed park.

The borough already owns 33-37 N. Railroad St., and the park will span between 31-39 N. Railroad St.

The partnership’s Tamaqua Remembers Committee is seeking $250,000 to help develop the park.
