PHS girls wrestlers fall to Easton, beat Liberty

The Parkland High School girls wrestling team split a pair of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference dual matches last week before a weeklong break for Christmas.

After winning their first two conference duals of the regular season, the Trojans (3-1 overall, 3-1 EPC) fell to Easton 39-36 last Tuesday, Dec. 17, but responded the next night with a 42-36 victory over Liberty.

The match with the Red Rovers was decided by just one win in favor of Easton. Parkland won six bouts, while the Red Rovers took seven.

There were four consecutive pins to open the match as Easton earned the first two at 100 and 106 pounds, respectively, and then Lily Snook and Payton Ocasio both collected pins at 112 and 118 pounds.

After the Red Rovers tallied a decision at 124 pounds to take a 15-12 lead, Parkland took its first lead of the match after Abigail Taylor collected a pin at 130 pounds as the Trojans went up 18-15.

Easton then recorded a pin and a forfeit win to go back on top. Angelina Spachman tallied a pin at 148 and Natalie Deutsch had a pin at 170 pounds with a Red Rover pin sandwiched in between as Parkland found itself behind 33-30. Easton won by forfeit at 190 to clinch the match.

Kendall Solenske won by forfeit at 235 pounds to conclude the match.

Just like against Easton, the Trojans were in a one-score match as they won seven bouts and the Hurricanes took six.

Ella Hesener and Snook both won by forfeits at 106 and 112 pounds, respectively, to go on top 12-6. Ocasio, Taylor, Spachman, Deutsch and Lizkarla Grullon Vasquez all earned pins to help seal the victory.

Parkland will compete in the Governor Mifflin Girls Tournament at Governor Mifflin Intermediate school this Friday and Saturday and then will host the annual Parkland Duals on Sunday, Jan. 5.
