Local Roundup: Results from Dec. 27

The Marian boys and girls basketball teams both advanced to the finals of their Christmas Tournaments.

The Colts defeated MMI and will face Panther Valley tonight, while the Fillies rolled past Jim Thorpe and meets New Hope-Solebury in the finals.

The Tamaqua girls also picked up a big win over Mahanoy Area to run increase their winning streak.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marian-MMI

Dominic Catrone had 12 points and Rocco Griguoli added 10 to pace Marian to a 58-28 rout of MMI in the first round of the Colts Christmas Tournament.

The winners rebounded from an early deficit by outscoring MMI by a 20-8 margin in the second quarter.

Marian will face Panther Valley in the championship round.

Nick Pantages registered a game-high 13 points in a losing effort.

Northwestern-Whitehall

Host Whitehall’s A.J. Hines poured in a game-high 27 points to send Northwestern to its first loss of the season, 60-54, in the opening round of the Zephyrs’ Christmas tournament.

The Tigers, who led by one entering the final quarter, received 17 points from Gavin Nelson and 13 from Eli Zimmerman.

Tamaqua-Saucon Valley

In a non-league thriller, Saucon Valley edged Tamaqua 57-56 in double overtime.

The Raiders missed two free throws with 0.6 seconds left to play in the second overtime that could have tied or possibly won the game.

Jack Robertson had a game-high 25 points for the Panthers.

Brady McCabe and Cooper Ansbach each had 13 points to pace Tamaqua. Noah Mateyak and Matt Vecolitis both added 10 for the Raiders, which dropped its fourth straight.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Saucon Valley

Lauren Ligenza scored a game-high 22 points to help Tamaqua roll to its sixth straight victory with a 60-28 rout of Mahanoy Area in non-league play.

Kolbe Robb added 11 points and recorded seven steals, while Millie Black tossed in 10 points for Lady Raiders, who ran their winning streak to six games.

Ella Connolly had a team-high 10 points for Mahanoy.

Marian-Jim Thorpe

Addy Fritz hit four three pointers during her 18-point performance to help Marian cruise to a 58-21 victory over Jim Thorpe in the opening round of the Lady Fillies Christmas tournament.

Olivia Serfass and Addy Marek added 10 points apiece for Marian, which led by 15 points after the first quarter.

Ryah Confer led Jim Thorpe with six points.

The Fillies will place New Hope-Solebury in tonight’s championship round while the Olympians take on Oley Valley in the consolations.

Palmerton-Nazareth

Renee Wells scored a game-high 16 points to help Nazareth edge Palmerton 38-29 in a tight battle during an opening-round matchup of the Pocono Mountain West tournament.

Palmerton rallied from a 25-14 halftime deficit to close to within 30-25 at the end of three quarters, but the Blue Bombers couldn’t close the gap and suffered their second defeat of the season.

Mikayla Pengelly paced Palmerton with nine points.

BOYS WRESTLING

Wadas Tournament

Pleasant Valley advanced seven wrestlers to the second day of the Frank Wadas Tournament at Tunkhannock High School Saturday.

Shawn Radcliffe (114), Lorenzo Demaio (121), Victor Custodio (127), John Hargrave (133), Aldin Vukel (189), Evan Gillespie (215) and Andrew Mihalichko (285) all will begin wrestling in the semifinal round today.

Jim Thorpe Tournament

Host Jim Thorpe had three wrestlers while Lehighton and Tamaqua each had one push through the quarterfinal round of the Olympians Christmas Tournament on Friday.

Jim Thorpe’s Christopher Jacobacci (121), Stephen Korte (133) and Aidan Sterling (215) will compete in the semifinal round Saturday. Lehighton’s Marc Macias (285) and Tamaqua’s Aiden Schlier (127) also moved on to the next round.

Northern Lehigh and Panther Valley are also competing in the tournament.
