Carbon set to receive C&Y funds
Carbon County officials say that some money owed by the state for services provided with Children and Youth will soon be turned over to the county.
On Thursday, Commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko reported that a meeting between the county, state Rep. Doyle Heffley and the state Children and Youth agency was productive.
“We had a very good meeting,” he said, noting that some of the reimbursements from earlier this year have been processed and sent to the Treasury for distribution. “We are waiting for that to go through and then hopefully we’ll get some of that money that is owed to the county.”
The county had not yet received just how much was processed for reimbursement as of the meeting.
Sofranko added that in addition to making progress on the reimbursements, the meeting allowed the county to air a lot of their concerns from the county’s perspective.
Earlier this month, Carbon County officials voiced their concerns over the reimbursement delays from the state, which total over $6 million. These funds are for Children and Youth Services, which is funded 80% by the state.
At the time, the commissioners said that when millions are owed, it puts a financial burden on the counties because counties must still provide these services using money from the general fund.
Carbon County also earlier this month took the first steps in obtaining an $8 million tax anticipation note for 2025.
Commissioner Rocky Ahner at that time said that the loan the county must take is covering for the state and not fixing the problem with getting reimbursed in a timely manner.
In addition to Children and Youth, the county was also owed approximately $660,000 for Area Agency on Aging services.
After reaching out to Heffley, the county has been able to receive approximately $600,000 in those reimbursements for that department.
