Skiers hitting the slopes

Extended holiday vacations has led to a surplus of skiers on the slopes at various ski resorts in the area.

Things were active on the slopes over the weekend at Blue Mountain Resort in Palmerton, according to Ashley Seier, director of marketing.

“This weekend was very busy with skiers and snow tubers,” Seier said. “Although we only received 2 inches of snow, it seems that it got people excited to get out on the slopes.”

Seier said things were very busy for a Monday as well.

“We are seeing typical weekend visitation numbers today,” she said. “We believe because Christmas is on a Wednesday this year people are taking extended holiday vacations before and after the actual Christmas holiday.”

Seier added that “snow-making weather has been fantastic.”

She said that on Monday, they were open with 27 trails, and expected to have 32 of its 40 trails open by Friday.

“We have 39 snow tubing lanes open,” she said. “This is the most lanes we have ever had open this early in the season.”

Seier said holiday hours for Blue Mountain Resort are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Christmas Eve; closed Christmas Day, and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Jan. 1.

She added the resort has a snow tubing New Year’s Eve party called ‘Tube in the New Year’ on Tuesday in which participants may snow tube from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Tony Santora, general manager, Jack Frost Big Boulder in Kidder Township, said they too have seen an uptick in skiers.

“We’ve had a really strong start to this season, the cold weather has been great,” Santora said. “We’ve been able to make a ton of snow right now, and it’s looking light we’ll be able to make snow until Friday, which is going to put in a really good position to expand our terrain.”

Santora also attributed the upswing in skiers to a combination of the cold weather and time of year.

“We’re excited for this holiday break,” he said. “We’re expecting lot more through this holiday break.”

Santora noted there will be a bubbly New Year’s Bash at 7:45 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at Big Boulder.

He said the event will include a DJ and fireworks.
