Police: Tamaqua driver hits pedestrian, flees

Tamaqua police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a borough man who they said ran over someone with his vehicle and fled the scene.

Police said James McElroy, 48, faces a host of charges following the 11:04 p.m. Dec. 12 incident at the corner of Greenwood and Cedar streets. He also is facing unrelated charges of stalking a woman.

Officers were dispatched for a report of a pedestrian struck in a hit-and-run crash. The person was taken inside a nearby bar due to the extreme cold and later transported to St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale by Tamaqua EMS.

A bar employee told police that McElroy had entered the bar and was starting problems with a woman there and was asked to leave.

McElroy left the bar and got into a Chevrolet Suburban. A man left the bar and as he was crossing the street, McElroy struck him with the vehicle and ran over him as he was on the ground, according to police. The Suburban then left the scene.

A patron inside the bar told police that he did not see what happened but because he is a paramedic, he checked the pedestrian who was hit and brought him inside the bar.

Police learned that McElroy was reportedly causing a disturbance at a home on West Union Street. Officers went to the location, where they saw the vehicle, which had a broken passenger side mirror. A resident there said that McElroy admitted to striking the pedestrian, police said.

McElroy, however, fled from the rear of the home. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact police at 570-668-6100.

Police said the struck pedestrian had a broken leg and possible internal injuries.

McElroy faces charges of aggravated assault; aggravated assault by vehicle; accident involving death or personal injury; simple assault, reckless endangerment; and reckless driving.

As for the stalking charges, police said that a woman came to the police department to report McElroy after she had heard about him running over the pedestrian.

The woman reported to police that McElroy had been texting her since October and told her that he had been “watching her” since he first saw her.

Police said McElroy began to make sexual comments to her and about her despite being told to stop. She also told police that he was a nuisance in the bar and often made advances on other patrons.

The woman reported to police that McElroy was texting her on Dec. 12 and told her that he would wait for her at the bar. Most of the messages were vulgar in nature, and the woman repeatedly told him to stop, police said.

McElroy faces charges of stalking and harassment in that case.
