Contract awarded to rehabilitate bridge on Route 209

A bridge past the east end of Lansford, located in the borough of Summit Hill, is getting rehabilitated.

Last week, the Carbon County commissioners had correspondence from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announcing that Kinsley Construction LLC has been awarded the contract for the Route 209 bridge over the abandoned Northern Reading Railroad project.

The correspondence states that the project involves “a bridge super structure rehabilitation” and other miscellaneous construction. The bridge carries East Patterson Street over the Lehigh Canal and abandoned railroad.

A time frame had not been disclosed in the correspondence, but according to previously published articles in the Times News, PennDOT expects to complete the project in 2025 and had earmarked $1.03 million for it.

The bridge has been in need of repairs for over a decade, with PennDOT reducing the weight limit of the bridge in 2011 due to deterioration.

At that time, PennDOT officials cited the need after a routine inspection revealed that there was deterioration of the main bridge concrete box beams.

In other Lansford matters, the county authorized the advertisement of the findings of no significant impact/request for release of funds and notice of intent to request the release of funds from the Community Development Block Grant for the demolition of 316 W. Patterson St., 334 W. Bertsch St., and 151 and 151.5 W. Ridge St.
