Reiner leads Weatherly past Nativity
It’s no secret who Weatherly’s go-to player is on the basketball court.
And that go-to player did a little bit of everything on Friday night to lead her team to their first win of the season — a 30-17 Schuylkill League decision over Nativity.
Kelly Reiner scored 24 points — including a stellar 12-of-14 performance at the free throw line — to carry her club. But even with such an outstanding effort, the junior was more excited about what the victory meant to her teammates.
“It’s really good to get a win,” said Reiner. “We’ve been working hard, and I’m glad to see that we won because it will give the other girls some confidence.
“I like to boost them up to show them they’ve still got it. It gives them that motivation, that they’re learning and getting better and improving. I like to see them light up when something goes well. I don’t want them to ever get down and think that they’re not good enough.”
Reiner lit things up in the opening quarter, scoring 10 points to help the Wreckers jump out to a 12-5 lead.
The first six of her points came on two three-point plays where she came up with steals, drove to the basket and converted at the line after being fouled.
“I usually don’t play the top on defense, but (coach) put me there tonight to get steals and I got them,” she said. “It felt good getting that lead because it gave us motivation to keep going.
“I take pride in (my free throw shooting),” she said. “It’s been really good there this season ... I think that’s where I get a lot of my points.”
Reiner added five more points in the second frame — accounting for all her team’s output in the period as Weatherly maintained its seven-point advantage.
The Wreckers’ Jillian Russell hit a jumper to open the second half to extend the lead, but the Golden Girls battled back.
Peyton Evans hit an eight-footer and Finley McNamara followed with a pair of jumpers to whittle the deficit to just 19-16.
After Weatherly head coach Jason Kane called a timeout, his team responded.
Reiner got an offensive rebound and putback, while Cortney Snyder hit from inside to push the margin back to seven.
“Kelly’s phenomenal,” said Kane. “She had a great game. She does it all on offense and defense — guard, post up, you name it. But everybody had a good game for us.
“The big thing is when they made that comeback, everybody kept their cool. It was good to see a young team do that, because that doesn’t happen too often.”
The Golden Girls could get no closer as Weatherly’s defense came up with six steals in the final quarter and the host team held Nativity to just one more point.
“We played good defensively, but it’s still a challenge because some of the girls have never played,” said Kane. “We had a late start with conditioning, and even now we’re still just doing basic plays and fundamentals at practice. We’re keeping it simple for the girls. We’re young. We only have one senior and she never played before.
“It was a good win. Any win’s a good win, especially this one. We’re equal teams. We knew coming into tonight this was one of the games we could possibly win.”
YOUNG TEAMS ... Weatherly has only one senior, while Nativity has just two and no juniors. Kane, who played three juniors and two sophomores, did say the junior high program has good numbers and should be able to help the team number-wise next season.
GLASS WORK ... Snyder, Reiner and Abigail Weston all had seven rebounds for the Wreckers, while Kylah Stewart collected eight for Nativity. McNamara paced the Golden Girls in scoring with five points.
