Sunday deadline
America250PA is accepting applications for the first round of semiquincentennial grants to help celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America.
The grants are available to any Pennsylvania municipal entity, county or registered nonprofit organization to be used toward programming, projects or events that focus on education, preservation, innovation and celebration of the semiquincentennial. The grants require an equal match from the recipient.
The deadline to apply for the first round of semiquincentennial grants is Sunday. A second round will be held in the spring.
Afternoon service
St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, has announced its Christmas Eve service will be at 3 p.m. Dec. 24. The Rev. Dr. Thomas Richards will lead the service.
It is hoped that with the change in time, more senior citizens can come to worship service than could be the case for an evening service.
Donations sought
The local Senior Center, gathering from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays and Fridays at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is seeking donations of new paper and plasticware. Call 570-242-6770.
KC for Kids
Monroe County Conservation District Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers Kettle Creek for Kids ages 3-6, beginning Jan. 14. An adult must stay with the child during the program, which will run every other Tuesday through March 11. Programs are one hour long and start at 10 a.m.
There will be different topics each week, with both indoor and outdoor activities planned, so dress for the weather and wear comfortable footwear is requested.
There is a cost per child, due the day of the program.

Quilt drawing
The Monroe County Seniors’ Express has a handmade quilt made by the local Senior Center in East Stroudsburg, that will be raffled off April 1, 2025. Proceeds will be used for the center.

Weatherization aid
The Monroe County Weatherization Program is available for folks who live in a single residential home.
To be eligible, the individual income limit is $30,120 (as of January 2024); for each additional household member add $10,760.
The free government-funded weatherization services are available to both owner-occupants and renters.

Tax/rent rebate
State Rep. Jack Rader reminds older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities that they have until Dec. 31 to apply for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program.
Income limits have increased and other information is available through his office.
