Angela Theatre reopens after renovations
The Angela Theatre in Coaldale will reopen Friday after a multiyear shutdown, sale and extensive renovations.
The 113 E. Phillips St. movie house will show “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at 4:35, 7:05 and 9:35 p.m. Friday, according to a recent post on Facebook.
“WELCOME BACK! We have missed you all so much and can’t wait to see your smiling faces!” according to the post from the Angela Triplex Theatre.
Additional show times for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, and the following weekend, the theater will run, “The Lion King — Mufasa.”
The Angela is also opening a Virtual Reality (VR) room.
“Unlike traditional gaming, our VR Arena offers a 360-degree environment where players can move freely, strategize, and compete. Whether you’re dodging virtual obstacles or teaming up to complete objectives, every moment is thrilling and unforgettable,” according to the website, Angelatheater.com.
The theater — like all movie houses — was ordered to close during the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring 2020. It reopened briefly in September 2020 before closing its doors about a year later.
It was put on the market and purchased in March by Rajasekharan and Sumithra Narayanasamy, according to Schuylkill County property records.
Since then, extensive renovation work — including a new roof — was done to the property.
The site has a history that spans decades.
It opened as the Angela Theater in 1949 but was closed between 1970 and 1998. The late Mike Danchak Sr. and his wife, Deb, and family members renovated the building and operated it until the time of the pandemic.
