Pennsylvania State Police Troop M, Fogelsville, is investigating a double fatal crash that occurred on Monday at approximately 4:53 a.m.
Troopers were dispatched to I-78 eastbound, Mile Marker 61.6, in Upper Saucon Township and determined the crash involved a Volvo tractor-trailer, Freightliner and 2003 Toyota Sienna.
Police said the crash resulted in two fatalities, three individuals being transported to St. Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill, and one individual transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township.
Police said their initial investigation showed three individuals were outside the vehicle attempting to push the Sienna in the right lane of travel.
One individual who was pushing the vehicle and the operator of the Volvo were killed.
All traffic was closed eastbound and detoured onto Route 309 during the investigation. Traffic reopened at approximately 11 a.m.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has video of it to contact them at 610-395-1438 and reference Incident Number PA24-1589849.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by a Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Unit, Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Upper Saucon Township Fire Department, Lower Saucon Township Fire Department, Lehigh County Coroner, PennDOT, the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and the Upper Saucon Ambulance corps.
