A Lehighton man was sentenced to one to three years on charges related to barricading himself inside the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford for nearly 13 hours in May 2023.
David Eisenhower, 44, who appeared in Carbon County Court, also must undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation and a mental health evaluation. He additionally will be on probation for one year following his sentence.
Mine workers found a cut lock and discovered someone on a lower level of the mine, beneath the area open for mine tours, on the morning of May 25.
Eisenhower told them he had a gun and threatened to shoot anyone who came down.
Workers also noticed smoke rising from inside the mine, as Eisenhower had set a fire to stay warm despite the danger of a methane explosion or underground mine fire.
State mine officials, county emergency management and detectives, state and local police were summoned to the mine, and the state police Special Emergency Response Team was also activated.
The SERT team brought Eisenhower out and he was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being lodged in the county lockup on warrants.
Officials found clothing, food debris, cans of food, cellphones and a knife inside the mine, in addition to the remnants of the fire.
Eisenhower was charged with burglary, risking catastrophe, criminal trespass, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and terrorist threats in the incident.
He was also sentenced to six months to one year and fined $2,500 on charges of driving with suspended licenses in 2022; and six months to one year on drug charges from 2023, with the sentence running consecutively with suspension charges.
